Hello, my name is Jennifer, but you can call me Jen. I’ve been sewing and crafting since I was eight years old and serging is my superpower!
I purchased my first serger over 15 years ago, when I was designing and sewing children’s dress up clothes and selling them on ebay and at craft shows. Costume fabrics are fun and beautiful and diverse, and many of them are hard to handle with a sewing machine. The first thing I did when I took my serger out of the box was to set it up for a rolled hem and to serge yards and yards of chiffon ruffles. I was hooked! As my serging skills blossomed, I transitioned to elaborate custom costumes for figure skaters, color guards and dancers.
After a career change from a chemical engineer to a domestic engineer (aka stay at home mom) I took a job at a local fabric store doing something I love – playing with fabric! When the store added a classroom, I became an educator, teaching sewing and serging classes. And when an opportunity came up at work to learn how to repair sewing machines and sergers, I jumped right in and became a service technician (after all, I was an engineer in a previous life.)
Although teaching sewing and repairing machines may seem like an unusual combination, it is a perfect pairing for me! I’ve always loved to put things together and figure out how things work. My mother used to ask me to put together my sister’s presents (like her Glamour Gal Cruise Ship – think Barbie house size), so it would be under the tree and ready for her to play with Christmas morning. (I also made the clothes for my sister’s dolls.)
I believe that a sewing room isn’t complete without a serger and hope to use my passion and knowledge to help people everywhere do more with their sergers.
